History

        Throughout its history, Wharton's Insurance and Risk Management Department has excelled in teaching and research and is highly respected academically and in the practitioner community. Its forward-looking philosophy continues to be in tune with the needs of a growing marketplace. The department has a rich tradition of educating future insurance leaders in industry, government, and academe.

        Dr. Solomon S. Huebner's achievements in the field of life insurance education and research are legendary. At the age of 22, he became one of the youngest persons in the history of the University of Pennsylvania to receive his PhD. He also became one of the Wharton School's youngest faculty members when he assumed teaching responsibilities following graduation. Founding the world's first academic program of insurance instruction and research at Wharton in 1913. Dr. Huebner went on to shape an industry, raising the standards and reputation of life insurance to that of a profession, and pioneering in the formulation and application of insurance concepts. The S.S. Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education was established at Wharton in his honor in 1941. Considered one of Wharton's greatest innovators, he remained a loyal member of the school's faculty until his retirement in 1953.
